Why this path
Most cybersecurity-career-change advice is generic and expensive. This path is the opposite: the same primary-source pedagogy doctoral programs use, applied to the actual entry-level cybersecurity market in 2026. You won't bounce between thirty random YouTube videos. You'll work the curriculum, build the portfolio, and walk into the interview with the vocabulary and the artifacts a hiring manager actually looks for.

How long does the break-in path actually take?
Six to nine months at a sustained 8 to 12 hours per week. Foundation phase is 4 to 6 weeks, Security+ takes most people 6 to 10 weeks, portfolio is 4 to 6 weeks, and the job-search runway is the variable: stronger metros and stronger portfolios close in 4 to 6 weeks, slower metros take 8 to 12.
Do I need a CS degree or prior IT experience?
No. Roughly 38% of practitioners in the ISC2 2025 Workforce Study entered the field from non-IT backgrounds. The path is built around that audience: it teaches the vocabulary, the threat landscape, and the role landscape from zero. Some technical aptitude (comfort with terminals, networking concepts, scripting) accelerates progress.
Is the $72-92K entry band realistic in 2026?
Yes for the top 25 metros and yes for fully-remote roles posted by national employers. Smaller metros and in-person-only roles cluster $58-78K. The $87,400 BLS median for 15-1212 reflects practitioners with 1+ years experience; first-job offers are typically a tier below the median.
