Cookies
Bespoke Intermedia LLC. Effective September 1, 2026. Updated October 12, 2026.
A cookie is a small text value a site stores in your browser so it can recognise you next time. This page lists every cookie DecipherU sets or lets another company set, and it says the same things as the what we keep page because both read from the same list.
Our own cookies
These are set by decipheru.com and shared with nobody. A page view alone sets none of them. The practice cookies appear when you answer a practice question, flag one or start a mock, or when you accept analytics in the banner. Match pages set none.
dcu_a(practice): A random id so we can tell that two practice sessions came from the same browser. It holds no name, email or device detail. Set: When you answer a practice question, flag one, or start a mock, or when you accept analytics. Not on Match pages. Lasts 365 days.dcu_s(practice): A session id so answers given in one sitting are grouped together. Set: Together with dcu_a. Lasts 30 minutes after your last action.dcu_ch(practice): Which channel brought you here the first time (search, a link, direct). Set once per anonymous id. Set: Together with dcu_a. Lasts 365 days.dcu_optout(necessary): Set to 1 when you opt out of the research event log. While it is present we do not write your practice events to that log. Your answers are still saved so the tool can pick your next question and show your score. Set: When you press the button on the opt-out page. Lasts 365 days.du_locale(necessary): Remembers the language you picked (English, Spanish) so we do not redirect you again. Set: When the site sends you to your browser's language on your first visit, or when you use the language switcher. Lasts 365 days.du_ref_code(marketing): The affiliate code in a link that brought you here (?ref=), so the person who referred you can be credited if you buy. Set: Only when you arrive through a link with ?ref= in it. Lasts 90 days.du_session(marketing): A random id that stops one affiliate click from being counted twice. Set: Together with du_ref_code. Lasts 90 days.
Local storage on your device

decipheru_cookie_consent: Your answer in the cookie banner.decipheru-theme: Light, dark or auto.dcu_match_draft_v1: Your unfinished Match answers, so a refresh does not lose them. Deleted when you finish.decipheru_visitor_id: A random id the short assessments under /assess use to tell one visitor's results from another's.du_*: Small streak and progress counters for games and the launchpad, kept only on your device.
Cookies set by other companies
Signing in sets Clerk's session cookies, which are needed for the account to work. The analytics and marketing tools below set cookies only after you accept that category in the banner; if you reject optional cookies, they never load.
- Clerk: Authentication and identity. United States. Required to run the site. Privacy policy.
- Stripe: Payment processing. United States with EU sub-processing. Required to run the site. Privacy policy.
- Cloudflare Turnstile: Bot check on sign-up. United States. Required to run the site. Privacy policy.
- PostHog: Product analytics. United States with EU hosting available. Only with analytics consent. Privacy policy.
The code can load Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, a Meta pixel and the LinkedIn Insight Tag, but our content security policy blocks all four, so none of them runs and none sets a cookie. If we turn one on, it will be listed above first and will load only after you accept its category in the cookie banner.
Saying no
The banner lets you reject optional cookies; the footer link reopens it. To stop your practice events from being written to the research log, use /privacy/opt-out, which sets dcu_optout=1. Your browser can also block or delete cookies; blocking all of them means you cannot sign in.
