SAFE MLO Test

Anyone who takes a mortgage application or negotiates loan terms for pay needs a state MLO license, and the SAFE MLO Test is the one national exam every state uses. It tests federal mortgage law (RESPA, TILA and TRID, ECOA, HMDA, the SAFE Act), uniform state content, general mortgage knowledge, origination and ethics.

The SAFE Act requires every state-licensed mortgage loan originator to pass the SAFE MLO Test before getting a license. NMLS reports a first-time pass rate of 53 percent. NMLS, SAFE MLO Test performance data.
