SAFE MLO: test day and accommodations

NMLS sets the rules for this exam and Prometric delivers it. This sheet lists what their pages say, each with the day we read it. If a rule matters to you, open the linked page and confirm it before you book, because owners change rules without notice.

We could not confirm which languages this exam is offered in. Check the owner's page before you book.

Asking for an accommodation

This summarizes the process the owner or vendor describes. It is not a legal or medical opinion and it does not say who qualifies. Questions about your own situation go to the owner or vendor.

How to ask for an accommodation

You send NMLS's Testing Accommodations team an Eligibility Questionnaire (needed for every new request) and a Verification Request Form (needed for an initial request and for added accommodations). NMLS lists the team's phone line in the handbook.

Approval before you book

Yes. NMLS says to receive accommodation approval before scheduling the test.

How long review takes

NMLS says all reasonable efforts will be made to decide within five business days.

Documents the owner asks for

The Verification Request Form with documentation of the diagnosis, generally no more than five years old. You pay for the documentation; NMLS says the accommodations themselves carry no charge. NMLS says accommodations are currently available for test center appointments only.

On the day

ID

Bring one current, non-expired government-issued photo ID that shows your signature. The name must match your NMLS account exactly. If your name changed, bring certified written documentation; faxes and photocopies are not accepted. Without the required ID you are denied admission, your enrollment window closes and the fee is lost.

Arrival and check-in

Report to the test center 30 minutes before the appointment. At Prometric centers you are photographed and scanned with a metal detector wand before each entry into a test room.

Not allowed in the room

No personal items in the testing room: phones and other electronics, pagers, watches, wallets, purses, weapons, hats, bags, coats, books, notes, pens or pencils. You empty and turn out your pockets before every entry. No dictionaries, scratch paper or reference materials, and no eating, drinking, gum or smoking. Personal calculators are not permitted; the administrator supplies a basic calculator and a wipe board that you return.

Online proctoring

Prometric's online proctored option (ProProctor) is, since October 1, 2024, only for candidates who qualify for testing accommodations. A request is made in NMLS and can take up to five business days. Check-in is 30 minutes before; a physical calculator, scratch paper and an erasable note board are not permitted online, with an onscreen calculator and scratchpad provided.
