Nurse aide (NNAAP)

Nurse aides give daily care in nursing homes and hospitals under a nurse's direction. The NNAAP written exam tests activities of daily living, basic nursing skills, independence, emotional and spiritual needs, communication, residents' rights, legal and ethical behavior, and teamwork.

Federal law requires nurse aides in Medicare and Medicaid nursing facilities to complete training and pass a state-approved competency evaluation before working more than four months. Many states use the NNAAP for that evaluation. 42 CFR 483.35(d) (Requirements for facility hiring and use of nurse aides).
