AI Research Labs
Mila is the Quebec AI Institute, the academic-affiliated AI research consortium founded by Yoshua Bengio in 1993 and headquartered in Montreal. Mila is the largest concentration of deep-learning research personnel in the world, with more than 1,200 researchers across its affiliated universities (Université de Montréal, McGill, HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal). Bengio shared the 2018 Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun for foundational deep-learning work. Mila is also the institutional home for the LawZero AI-safety initiative announced in 2025.
Why this matters in 2026
Mila is the institutional home for one of the most-cited bodies of foundational deep-learning research. Bengio's 2018 Turing Award and his 2023 public commentary on advanced AI risk together place Mila at the center of both technical foundations and the safety conversation.
