Microsoft AI is the consolidated organization formed in early 2024 to unify Microsoft's consumer and product AI work under former Inflection CEO Mustafa Suleyman. The group owns Copilot consumer surfaces while Azure AI continues to operate the OpenAI-partnership commercial infrastructure that powers Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Azure OpenAI Service.
Why this matters in 2026
The Microsoft-OpenAI partnership remains the largest enterprise AI distribution channel and the dominant deployment path for production Copilot work. The May 2024 Recall consumer-AI feature recall (security and privacy concerns from researchers and regulators) is the most-cited example of a major Microsoft AI ship-and-pull-back cycle.
