IBM watsonx is IBM's enterprise AI platform launched at Think 2023. The platform has three core surfaces: watsonx.ai (the model training and inference platform with IBM Granite open-weight models), watsonx.data (the lakehouse), and watsonx.governance (AI risk and compliance tooling aligned to the NIST AI RMF and EU AI Act). IBM Research released the Granite 3.0 family in October 2024 under permissive licenses, targeting regulated-industry enterprise deployment.

Why this matters in 2026

IBM Granite 3.0 (October 2024) is one of the few major open-weight foundation model releases targeted explicitly at enterprise governance. The Apache-2.0 license plus IBM Consulting's regulated-industry distribution channel position watsonx differently from OpenAI / Anthropic API access.

  • watsonx.data (lakehouse)
  • watsonx.governance (risk + compliance)
  • IBM Granite (open-weight foundation models, Apache-2.0 licensed)
