Allen Institute for AI (Ai2)
The Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) is the nonprofit AI research institute founded by Paul Allen in 2014 and headquartered in Seattle. Ai2 ships open research artifacts at scale: the OLMo open-source language model family (with fully open training data, code, and weights), the Dolma open-source pretraining corpus (3 trillion tokens), and the Tülu instruction-tuned model family. Ai2 also operates Semantic Scholar (academic search) and a long-running PRIOR computer-vision team.
Why this matters in 2026
Ai2's OLMo release (February 2024) was the first frontier-class language model to ship with the full training corpus, training code, and intermediate checkpoints. The release set the open-science bar that every later open-weight model release is measured against.
