Stanford HAI is the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, founded in 2019. HAI ships the annual AI Index Report (the canonical reference for industry-level AI metrics on compute, investment, capability benchmarks, and policy), operates the Center for Research on Foundation Models (CRFM) which publishes model evaluation benchmarks including HELM, and convenes policy work across academia, industry, and government. The 2025 AI Index Report is widely treated as the reference baseline for state-of-the-AI-industry numbers.

Why this matters in 2026

Stanford HAI's annual AI Index Report is the canonical numeric baseline for any 2026 industry-state claim about AI compute, capability, investment, or policy. CRFM's HELM benchmark is the academic counterweight to vendor-published evals from foundation labs.
