In 2026 a client sells one stock at an $18,000 loss and another at a $6,000 gain, with no other capital items. What is the tax result for the year?
- A A $3,000 deduction this year, with the remaining $9,000 net loss carried forward
- B A $12,000 deduction this year, with no net loss left to carry forward
- C A $3,000 deduction this year, and the remaining $9,000 net loss is simply lost
- D An $18,000 deduction against ordinary income, with the gain ignored entirely
Example answer, marked sure: B · Correct answer: A
Losses first offset gains, leaving a net loss of $12,000. The IRS says up to $3,000 ($1,500 if married filing separately) of net loss may be deducted against income each year and any remainder carries forward to later years. So $3,000 is deducted and $9,000 carries forward, which is A. Choice B ignores the annual cap. Choice C forgets the carryforward. Choice D also ignores the cap and the gain offset.
