A real question from the full analysis

This is how each question you miss appears in the report. The question, the right answer, the explanation and the source are real. The answer shown as yours is an example, not anyone's data.

A company has 100,000 shares of $1 par common stock outstanding. It declares and distributes a 10% stock dividend when the market price is $15 per share. What amount is credited to additional paid-in capital?

  • A $150,000
  • B $10,000
  • C $140,000
  • D $0

Example answer, marked sure: A · Correct answer: C

C: a small stock dividend (below roughly 20 to 25%) is recorded at fair value. 10,000 new shares x $15 = $150,000 is moved out of retained earnings, $10,000 goes to common stock at par, and the other $140,000 to additional paid-in capital. A is the total debit to retained earnings. B is the par value credit. D would apply to a stock split or a large stock dividend recorded at par. Rule to remember: stock dividends shift amounts within equity and do not change total equity.
