The Cyber Kill Chain is a seven-phase model developed by Lockheed Martin that describes the stages of a cyberattack: reconnaissance, weaponization, delivery, exploitation, installation, command and control, and actions on objectives. Defenders use it to identify where they can detect or disrupt an attack at each phase.
The Kill Chain gives defenders a structured way to think about attack progression. SOC analysts use it to classify alerts by attack phase. Incident responders trace intrusions through Kill Chain stages. While ATT&CK has become more granular, the Kill Chain remains a useful mental model and appears on CompTIA and CISSP exam objectives.
