Content Security Policy is an HTTP response header that tells browsers which sources of content (scripts, styles, images, frames) are permitted on a page. CSP mitigates cross-site scripting by preventing the browser from executing inline scripts or loading resources from unauthorized domains, even if an attacker injects malicious markup.
CSP is a critical defense-in-depth control for web applications. Security engineers configure CSP headers to restrict script sources and block inline JavaScript. Penetration testers evaluate CSP policies for bypasses. A well-configured CSP can prevent exploitation of XSS vulnerabilities even when input validation fails.
