PSI adds a $43 convenience fee at its sites and for remote testing. Live scan fingerprints are $74.

The CDI publishes the statewide figure in its Curriculum Board minutes of October 16, 2025: from January to September 2025, 60% of 36,051 first-time license exams passed (63% remote proctored, 58% in a test center). That figure covers every producer license type together, so it is not the Life exam's own rate. The CDI and PSI pages we read state no pass rate for this exam.

A Life-only licensee may sell annuities after the annuity course, but not 24-hour care coverage, and may sell long-term care only through accelerated death benefit riders. To retest you re-register with PSI, and the bulletin sets no waiting period between attempts. Insurance Code section 1682 bars anyone who has failed the same exam 10 times from taking it for 12 months from the last failure. Attempts are counted by exam type.

A passing result lasts one year
Under Insurance Code section 1676(a) an exam is valid for one year from the date you passed it. After passing, submit your fingerprints before you submit the license application, then apply with the license types you qualify for selected.

Renewal and continuing education
The Life license renews every two years for $188, with a $282 late fee, and the one fee covers Life and accident and health together. Each term takes 24 hours of continuing education, 3 of them ethics with one hour on insurance fraud. Before selling annuities a Life licensee must finish an 8-hour annuity course.

License Examination Objectives from January 1, 2026
From January 1, 2026 the former prelicensing educational objectives became the CDI License Examination Objectives, published as a study guide for applicants. The department stopped reviewing prelicensing courses for producer licenses, and the 20-hour prelicensing requirement was removed from Insurance Code section 1749.

Exam length: 75 questions, 105 minutes
The CDI lists the Life exam at 75 questions in 1.5 hours. The PSI bulletin, revised March 2026, allots 105 minutes because unscored experimental questions, generally about 10% of the count, are added and their time is included; a tutorial of up to 15 minutes does not count. Passing takes 60 percent. A combined life, accident and health exam also exists: 150 questions.

Cancel two business days ahead
You can cancel and reschedule without losing the fee if PSI gets notice at least two business days before the exam, by its website or phone; a voicemail or email does not count. If you do not start within 15 minutes of the booked time you forfeit the fee. Arrive 30 minutes early.

One government photo ID
Bring one valid, unexpired government-issued ID with a photograph and a signature, such as a driver's license from any state, passport, California ID, military ID or permanent resident card. An out-of-state ID card is not accepted, and remote testing accepts a shorter list. The name must match your registration.

Remote proctored testing is offered
PSI offers a remote online proctored version of every insurance license exam, in addition to its test sites and the department's Los Angeles site. The $43 convenience fee applies to the remote test as well. Pass or fail shows on screen at the end and the score report is emailed.
