IDS

Intrusion Detection System. A device or software that monitors network traffic or system activity for malicious behavior and policy violations. IDS generates alerts but does not block traffic. Network-based IDS (NIDS) inspects packets on the wire, while host-based IDS (HIDS) monitors system logs and file integrity.
