RTO defines the maximum acceptable duration of downtime before a system must be restored. An RTO of two hours means the system must be back online within two hours of failure.

Security engineers design failover architectures to meet RTO requirements. Shorter RTOs demand redundant infrastructure and automated recovery, which raises infrastructure costs.
