PCI refers to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), a set of security controls required for any organization that stores, processes, or transmits credit card data. The PCI Security Standards Council maintains and updates the standard.

Security engineers implement network segmentation, encryption, and access controls to meet PCI requirements. Noncompliance can result in fines, increased transaction fees, or loss of the ability to process card payments.
