BCBA requirements in 2027: what changes on January 1

Starting January 1, 2027, the BACB accepts BCBA applications through two pathways instead of four. To be reviewed under the current 2022 requirements, a complete application with payment and all required documents must reach the BACB by December 31, 2026. The BACB's January 2026 guidance lists no upcoming change to the BCBA exam. Read from the BACB on October 18, 2026.

What changed this week

  • Application deadline for the 2022 rules in 73 days,
  • Two eligibility pathways begin in 74 days,

What are the BCBA requirements for 2027?

The BACB handbook says that starting January 1, 2027, people can apply for BCBA certification through two pathways. Both need a degree, behavior-analytic coursework, supervised fieldwork and a passing score on the BCBA exam.

  • Pathway 1: a master's degree or higher from an accredited or recognized behavior analysis degree program (an APBA-accredited program, or an ABAI-accredited or recognized program).
  • Pathway 2: a master's degree or higher plus behavior-analytic coursework.
  • Pathways 3 and 4 are no longer offered. The BACB says that to apply under pathway 3 or 4, you must apply, and meet all requirements, before January 1, 2027.

Should I apply before January 1, 2027?

Your readiness decides it, and the BACB's own advice is to plan for both sets of rules when you are unsure. In plain terms:

  • You meet all the 2022 requirements and can submit a complete application, with payment and every required document, by December 31, 2026. The BACB will review it under the 2022 requirements.
  • You will not meet them by then. The 2027 requirements apply, and pathway 2 coursework changes (see below). Check your program against the 2027 list before you plan your remaining courses.
  • You are on pathway 3 or 4. Those pathways close to new applications on the same date, so the date is a hard stop for you.
  • You are unsure which side you will land on. The BACB strongly recommends meeting both sets of fieldwork requirements, completing both the 2022 and 2027 monthly fieldwork verification forms, and keeping the records for at least seven years.

What changes in BCBA coursework in 2027?

The total stays at 315 content hours, but pathway 2 coursework has to be organized differently. The BACB's transition guidance lists these changes:

  • Basic Principles of Behavior must be a standalone course of 45 hours, and Theory and Philosophy in Behavior Analysis a second standalone course of 45 hours.
  • Behavior Assessment and Intervention content must be 90 hours across two freestanding courses.
  • Organizational Behavior Management, previously called Personnel Supervision and Management, rises from 30 to 45 hours in a freestanding course.
  • Ethics must be one standalone course of 45 hours and can no longer be split across several courses.
  • A pathway 2 degree or set of coursework may not be earned in less than one calendar year.

What changes in BCBA fieldwork in 2027?

The BACB compares the two sets of fieldwork requirements in its transition guidance. The hours stay the same. The limits and the observation rules change:

BCBA fieldwork, 2022 and 2027, as the BACB lists them
Item20222027
Supervised fieldwork hours2,0002,000
Supervised: hours per month20 to 13020 to 160
Supervised: observation with a clientOne per month60 minutes per month
Concentrated fieldwork hours1,5001,500
Concentrated: supervision10%7.5%
Concentrated: hours per month20 to 13020 to 160
Concentrated: observation with a clientOne per month90 minutes per month
  • The BACB notes that observations count by duration from 2027, not by number of contacts, so observations completed under the 2022 rules may or may not meet the 2027 standard.

Does the BCBA exam change in 2027?

The 2027 change is to who can apply, not to the exam. The BACB's transition guidance, updated January 2026, says the BCBA exam has been based on the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th edition) since January 1, 2025, and that there are no upcoming changes to the exam or the outline. It also says exam updates will happen separately from changes to certification requirements. The BACB handbook adds that you take the version of the exam in effect when you schedule your exam appointment. Check the BACB page for a newer statement before you rely on this.

What this means for your timeline

Work backward from December 31, 2026. If you want the 2022 requirements, your fieldwork, coursework and application payment all have to be complete and received by then, and the BACB does not extend that date on the pages we read. If you are past that point, plan to the 2027 table above. The date also does not change the retake rules: in BACB jurisdiction you have two years from application approval to pass, with up to 8 attempts at least 30 days apart.
